Guanajuato attractions: plan your alley, overlook and museum stops

Guanajuato's sights split between the tight Zona Centro and one standout that sits outside it. The Callejón del Beso, the Pípila overlook and Teatro Juárez all cluster in the historic center, while the Museo de las Momias lies by the Panteón Municipal on Cerro Trozado, far enough that a taxi makes more sense than a walk.

The alley is free and open around the clock, but its narrow passage fills with groups at midday, so come early or late. The Pípila statue on Cerro de San Miguel gives the classic view over tiled roofs and churches; ride the red funicular behind Teatro Juárez or climb the alleys, then descend past the Subida de San Miguel murals.

Teatro Juárez shows its 1903 facade and twelve green stone columns from the street at no cost, though the Moorish hall inside opens mainly around performances, so check the schedule. The Mummy Museum holds 111 naturally mummified bodies in a single hall, an under-an-hour stop best reached by taxi.

Allow 10 to 20 minutes for the alley and 10 to 15 for the theater exterior, and keep the overlook short but leave time for photos.

Free stops in the center

The Callejón del Beso costs nothing to enter and stays open around the clock. Teatro Juárez is free from the street: the 1903 facade, its twelve green stone columns and the muse statues can all be seen without a ticket, though the interior hall depends on performance tickets.

The Pípila monument on Cerro de San Miguel is best treated as a viewpoint; plan around the funicular or the climb.

What to check before you go

Teatro Juárez recommends booking if you want to see the Moorish-style hall inside, since it opens mainly around performances. Check the schedule before counting on entry.

The Mummy Museum needs no booking; its 2019 rates were 52 pesos general and 37 for students. The Callejón del Beso also requires no booking, but arriving early or late helps avoid the midday queues of groups waiting for the same photo.
